About the community

Located in the outer Northern Suburbs of Metropolitan Adelaide, within the Local Government region of Playford, the Smithfield Plains region encompasses the suburbs of Smithfield, Smithfield Plains, Davoren Park, Elizabeth North and Munno Para. The residential population is 16298 with 1451 children aged 0 to 5 years (ABS Census 2011). There is a significantly high level of socio-economic disadvantage within the Smithfield Plains region. The percentage of Indigenous Australians within the Smithfield Plains community is significantly higher than National and State averages. A large number of persons have been born overseas with many of them originating from the United Kingdom. There is also an increasing number of CALD communities especially the Burundi community within the Smithfield Plains region.

Smithfield Plains and the Let's Read program

Smithfield Plains commenced delivery of the Let’s Read community program in 2010. Let’s Read is currently being offered at the Elizabeth North Child Parent Centre, Swallowcliffe Pre-school and the Bubs’n’Me and Learning Together playgroups based at Para West Adult Campus.
