Development of Let's Read Reading Tip Sheets

The reading tip sheets were developed in collaboration with early literacy and childhood development experts. They incorporate aspects of the Abecedarian Approach to early lteracy and draw upon the recent market research commissioned by the Murdoch Children's Research Institute that explored families attitudes towards and undertsanding of the importance of reading with children from birth.

Across each age range (from 4 months, 12 months, 18 months and 3 ½ years) the reading tips incorporate: language development, everyday words in the environment around us, songs, rhymes, books, and conversational reading. Effort has also been made to ensure that tips also encourage families to observe and acknowledge or respond to what their child looks at or is most interested in. The techniques of the Abecedarian Approach of Conversational Reading (See, Show, and Say), as well as Enriched Caregiving (Notice, Narrate and Nudge) have been incorporated into the language and strategies outlined in the new tips sheets.

Illustrations by Wendy Paterson Wendy-P.jpg

Let’s Read was very fortunate to work with Wendy Paterson during the development of the 2013 resources. Wendy produced beautiful illustrations including new mascots that sign post the four age points for the reading tips and book suggestions, Australian animals engaging in early literacy activities and a series of illustrations depicting the Let’s Read campaign key messages that have been developed into a poster series that will be available soon.

Wendy Paterson has worked as an Archaeologist, t-shirt designer, research and secondary school teacher, but has finally settled down to do what she has actually wanted and that is to illustrate. Her first big project was to illustrate 20 books that make up the Honey Ant Reader as well as their activity books and fun educational resources. She has illustrated many other educational materials and one children’s picture book.

She is inspired by the beauty and peace of nature; bright colour and cultures from her travelling days and the funny things children do. With two furry cats, two lovely little girls, one great husband and an awesome view, Wendy cannot help but draw happy colourful pictures that make people smile when they look at them!
