Community stories

Fairfield Public School (Schools as Community Centres) – Kristina Pukeroa

Let’s Read is a great program which covers all emergent literacy skills in young children, which is also user friendly in supporting and educating parents in engaging with their children in both structured and spontaneous situations. The Let’s Read resources allowed us to develop a home borrowing library for the families of my playgroups.  Instead of “Little Libraries” handing books out for families to keep, we decided  children would read the book a few times and then as they grew older would lose interest in that particular book, so we  kept the books in the SaCC room and developed a library instead, where families would be exposed to a wider variety of books and be able to take the books home and read together. Families would also be able to implement the strategies which they have learnt from the Let's Read program and have the group come back to on a weekly basis to debrief, ask questions or gain support from facilitators and other parents.
