About the community

Mackay is a city on the eastern coast of Queensland, Australia, about 970 kilometres north of Brisbane on the Pioneer River. Mackay is nicknamed the sugar capital of Australia because its region produces more than a third of Australia's cane sugar. It has a population of 166,811 which is very diverse. Mackay is a vibrant exciting tropical city, booming from the richness of sugar and mining.

The Let's Read program in Mackay is very involved in the community by having reading corners at  many festivals like the Food & Wine festival, under 8's Week, Child Protection Week and many more.
